We are a non-governmental organisation working in Sudan, committed to building safe and dignified lives in harmony with nature. We address the impact of climate change and biodiversity loss on communities, improve civic space, and promote peace.
OUR PROGRAMS
Our civil society program responds to the urgent challenges confronting Sudanese organizations following the destructive 2023 conflict—which rolled back democratic progress, precipitated a large-scale humanitarian crisis, and severely curtailed civic space. The program empowers civil society to help shape Sudan’s future by: strengthening collaborative leadership across sectors; building organisational and technical capacity through innovative tools and tailored training; and advocating for an enabling environment that safeguards fundamental freedoms and the space for peaceful civic engagement.
Civil Society Empowerment and Transition
Our Red Sea resilience program addresses urgent climate and social problems in Sudan’s Red Sea State by protecting and restoring the fragile marine and land ecosystems at Sanganeb Atoll, Dungonab Bay–Mukkawar Island National Park, and Erkowit Reserve. These areas face growing threats from climate change, resource overuse, and deep social inequality, which harm wildlife and local coastal livelihoods. We use ecosystem-based management, community-led resource governance, and inclusive livelihood support to restore ecosystems, boost local resilience, and promote fair, sustainable development.

A Journey of Resilience
and Empowerment
SUDIA, initially the Sudanese Development Initiative Abroad, was founded in Cairo, Egypt, in the late 1990s by young Sudanese seeking refuge after the overthrow of Sudan's democratic government. Driven by empathy for fellow displaced Sudanese, SUDIA quickly evolved under the Near East Foundation, building organizational capacity and trust within the Cairo community.
Early achievements included mobilizing resources for cultural preservation, dialogue, and educational initiatives fostering inter-ethnic understanding. SUDIA extended its reach, channeling international support to address critical needs and promote self-reliance for displaced communities across the Horn of Africa, embracing digital tools for wider impact.
Recognizing the complexities of displacement within Sudan, SUDIA prioritized prevention alongside direct aid. Witnessing the devastating effects of conflict and food crises, early collaborations aimed at comprehensive solutions. Learning and adaptation have been key to SUDIA's growth, formalising its non-profit status in Florida in 1999 to better serve refugees and internally displaced persons.
Making inroads into Sudan in early 2002 and subsequently registering as a Sudanese NGO in 2008, SUDIA has continued to grow and adapt. Today, the organization collaborates with diverse stakeholders on programs promoting democracy, human rights, climate resilience, and peacebuilding, while also offering expert services in research, training, and media/communications. SUDIA’s ongoing journey reflects a steadfast commitment to empowering Sudanese and other vulnerable communities, building resilience, and fostering dignified futures in the face of persistent challenges.
